KNICKS FANATICS

Isiah's Parting Shots

I'll be the first to reminisce about Pat's sweat dripping chin as he idles by the free throw line during a spirited playoff performance. I fell over myself when Mase arrived to a game with "Mase In Yo Face" shaved into his head. I loved watching Derek Harper with his head up on the break or the weird hitch in his shot. John Starks "fire and desire" are unquestionable. Oak, the prototypical enforcer with a surprisingly smoother outside shot.
Those are just some of the heroes from the 90's Knicks era.

But what I remember most was how unceremoniously they were criticized, fractured and ultimately dismantled. The culprits? Unappreciative fans and bored reporters. People who berated these Knicks who lost to, what history has proven, the best player in NBA history on a team he led to 6 championships.

Patrick Ewing is no slouch, the HOF has affirmed it this past week.
Isiah Brows
For some unknown reason, after all the public scrutiny and disdain, Isiah still wants to be "a part of the process" that puts together a championship winning team in NY. No fan can want more. Right or wrong, Isiah had this to say:

“I’m on the job and I look forward to making it better,” he said. “Our job and our goal is to one day win a championship here, and I have every intention of being a part of that process.”

“New York is a unique situation in it’s own right and it brings unique problems, but that’s why we’re here to iron these things out and work them out and continue moving,” Thomas said. “The last championship here that was won was 1973 and there’s a lot of work that needs to be done and there’s work that has been done and there’s more that we’ll continue to do. You just don’t jump up and win championships. New York has threatened to win a couple of times, but you’ve never really won and I want to win it and everything we’re trying to do here is build it so one day we can win a championship."

“I was laughed at in Detroit when I was talking this way and a couple of years later, after putting in the work, eventually we did it. I have extreme confidence that we’ll get it done here. You can mock and laugh along the way because that’s how it goes when you’re on the bottom and you’re trying to get to the top, but I’m extremely confident that we will get to the top as a Knick organization. We will deliver something that one day everyone will be proud of. Again, you haven’t been proud here since ‘73. So we’ve got our work cut out and I intend to stick it through and stick it out. It’s a tough place and you deliver tough blows, but my job is to take it, and to keep moving, and to move through it. I’ve won in this league several times, and I intend to win more times than that. Say what you want and do what you want, but one day you’ll be asking me how’d it feel when I was sitting here, and I’ll tell you how I felt, then I’ll talk to you about the championships hopefully we’ll deliver for you.”

You're a loser until you win it all. Isiah wanted to remind us all that we haven't won it all since 1973. Thanks Isiah...I think. I hope you feel better now that you've got that off your chest.

You better hope Donnie sees the humor in it too.

"I really believe we have been competitive in spite of."

That's a cool little jump off spot for me.

When I consider how long Steph was out.
How his episode undermined a season that was introducing Zach Randolph to NY.
How Curry failed as ZBo's teammate.
How ZBo gradually got worse at the team game as the season wore on.
How many times DLee got blocked in cruch time and not.
How JCraw continues to take (and sometimes make) unjustifiable shots
How invisible JJeff was.
How useless QRich was.

They weren't all bad. At least, they weren't all bad, all the time.

Truth is, NY ain't easy. You have to either be hard-headed or a complete soulless asshole to succeed here. All me, all the time.

To his credit, Zeke managed to leave a better product than was left for him. He still managed to put talent on the roster and fill every position with a legit player. In the end, it was too much to overcome and that's the story that is never told. He failed...sure...but he failed fighting. And he continues to take the presses best shots...and to me, and evidently to Chuck Daly too, he's managed to handle himself well.

He has never gone Bob Knight on them.
He hasn't cursed or threatened anyone.

Lord knows I would if I knew everyone in the room was trying to set me up to look like a fool in tomorrow's papers.

@ Barf,
Shaq looked great! When he was doubled Amare made them pay for it!
I believe he scored 16 points had 9 bounds and 2 blocks with a lot of Altered shots ( I wish that was a stat they keep track of) and he shut down the paint!
The Spurs couldn't get inside. The suns toyed with the Spurs the entire 2nd half! BTW....I didn't see hill play the entire game! I believe they will win the Chip this year! I will root for GSW...but the Suns have too much fire power
for any team now that Shaq is Back!

Barf:
"How ZBo gradually got worse at the team game as the season wore on."
By that statement you're saying he was better at the team game at the start of the season. Not really!
Zach was Zach. Period. That was the same Zach in Portland.
Zeke also gave Craw too much of a green light, and too much playing time. It was as though he felt that the team couldn't play without Craw.
I know everyone thinks Mardy is D-League material, but given time Mardy is a player. That was one of my dissapointments of the season.
A player that has been sitting for the entire season needs time on the court to get that rhythm to compete on a high level. That's the same Mardy that Clyde was so impressed with last year when we had injuries and he got playing time.

Doing the little Marbury piece made me do a lot of thinking about somebody I really haven't wanted to think about because much of this season has been about him. Yet I wonder:

When he was talking outta his ass about having the goods on Isiah, was it that he knew about Isiah's intention to tank?

Were Q, Curry, Crawful and Steph on the Tank Team?

Will Donnie be willing to tank a season from the GM Box to procure another blue chipper?

Is Jimmy D. really "The Boss" ala Steinbrenner or just giving the okeydoke to whatever plans are presented?

I thought Zach was trying in the first month. I thought he was over passing from the high position in the perimeter and come crunch time...yes, he'd nut and start trying to take over the game. I refuse to heap blame at him cuz he came here and did what he did in Portland. For being his first yr as a Knick, I dont think you can't blame him for being the player he is.

It really fell on the returning Knicks to have a gameplan and a strategy to incorporate Zach into the scheme.

That's why I really hate on Steph for doing what he did...especially so early in the season. If you wanna gripe after 2 losing months spent on the bench...yes, bitch and moan to Berman til ur hearts content. But to refuse to go to the bench? Then break out on the team and try to contact Spermin to use him as a personal assistant?

Is Steph that stupid?

Coming off the summer that he went through? Are u serious?

I have mixed feeling about JCraw this yr. I think he stepped up and tried to deilver more than he's capable of delivering. And for that, I'm appreciative. But then again, I like his style of play. I wouldnt want a whole roster of street ballers but I like his style and his moves on a professional court. Not too many players can get away with his dribble and drop step in front of an NBA ref's whistle. I find it funny how the refs killed many Knick runs early in the yr by calling his carry and stopped somewhere during the season.

I think Zeke gave him a green light but who else was going to play guard with Steph gone.

Steph's number went down as a Knick cuz his idea of a "team-oriented" PG is to play passive and he stopped attacking defenses. His soldier mentality made him think that he had to sacrifice his aggression on the court and that approach obviously built resentment. When Zeke told him that the bench was his next destination, he felt embarrassed and betrayed. But the truth is that Steph doesn't have a "team-oriented" PG in his repertoire. He can't maintain that mentality and not feel like he's being done wrong. He's got too much ego to lead a team of men.

He'll go down, in my book, as Zeke's biggest gamble and ultimately...his biggest mistake.

I just can't blame Zach that much because it was his first year on a losing squad. It was the responsibility of the team to be a stable and fostering environment. Zach wasn't brought on as a savior. He was just another high-priced piece.

It was on the existing roster to gel and continue the progress they showed in the previous yr. Steph blew it...and so went the team as it tried to adjust.

That's how I'll tell the story.

Scene from the Ballad of Ricky Bobby played by the Knicks

The part of Chip will be played by: Donnie Walsh
Ricky Bobby: Isiah Thomas
Cal: Jimmy Dolan
Walker: Stephon Marbury
Texas Ranger (TR): Nate Robinson

Ricky Bobby: How was school today, boys?
Walker: I threw a bunch of Grandpa Chip's war medals off the bridge.
[Chip is startled]
Ricky Bobby: Sounds like a good day. How 'bout you, TR?
Texas Ranger: The teacher asked me what was the capital of North Carolina. I said Washington, D.C.
Cal Naughton, Jr.: Bingo.
Ricky Bobby: Nice.
Texas Ranger: She said "No, you're wrong." I said "You got a lumpy butt." She got mad at me and yelled at me and I pissed in my pants and I never did change my pee-pants all day. I'm still sittin' in my dirty pee-pants.
Cal Naughton, Jr.: I wet my bed until I was nineteen. There's no shame in that.

Chip: I can't hold my tongue. These kids are my grandchildren and you are raising them wrong. They are *terrible* boys!
Walker: Shut up, Chip, or I'll go ape-shit on your ass!
Texas Ranger: I'm gonna scissor-kick you in the back of the head!
Cal Naughton, Jr.: Yeah!
Ricky Bobby: Yeah! Now turn up the heat!
Cal Naughton, Jr.: Go on and get some, boys!
Ricky Bobby: Come on!
Walker: I'm ten years old, but I'll beat your ass!
Texas Ranger: Chip, I'm gonna come at you like a spider monkey!
Cal Naughton, Jr.: Like a spider monkey! Go on!
Ricky Bobby: Chip, you brought this on, man.
Walker: Greatest Generation my ass. Tom Brokaw's a punk!
Chip: What is wrong with you?
Texas Ranger: Chip, I'm all jacked up on Mountain Dew!

Last questions for a while:

Were there tankers and non-tankers?
Who was on either side of that equation?
What were the interactions like between those camps if they existed?

I don't know about the Tanker theory,
I do know that Dolan stated " We will be like the Celtics"
What that means is very rhetorical!

Walsh, Zeke and Dolan were recently talking about life in general, when
Zeke says " Damn it sucks getting Old, Every morning I have to piss and I'm standing over the toilet far too long."

Dolan then says " Thats nothing Zeke, every morning I have to take a
big shit and man, I'm on the toilet an hour, I'm old and constapated."

Walsh then says " you young ones have nothing to complain about,
every morning at 7:30AM I piss like a Race Horse, then every morning
at 8:30AM I shit like a pig."

Whats wrong with that asked Zeke and Dolan?

Walsh says " The problem is I don't wake up until 9:00 AM."
