DHoward!Raps Get Slapped Up Out of the 'Offs

There's no doubt about it. Chris Bosh and the Raptors had nothing for Dwight Howard and his Magic. The Raps were the first team bumped out of the 2008 playoffs as Dwight Howard continues to rip through the competition with scoring, brutal rebounding and insane blocks.

He's a beast no matter how you look at it. His 21 pt, 21 rebound performance left no doubt who wanted it more.

"They played a great series, they executed on offense and defense better than we did and when it came to the small things, they did a better job," Chris Bosh said after the Magic ended Toronto's season with a 102-92 Game 5 victory last night.

"I can't sit here and bark in protest that the better team didn't win. That's pretty obvious. They beat us pretty good."

Bosh couldn't help but put the GM hat on after suffering the loss that ended his team's season.

"If we have somebody that is aggressive on the offensive end, creating plays, making shots and getting to the basket ..." said Bosh, his thought trailing off. "I think we have some shooters, but if our shooters develop a talent where they can take guys off the dribble, that'll make us a lot better."

The Magic outmanned the Raps on the perimeter as coach Mitchell seemed unable to find a lineup to suit his mood. After an unlucky an injury-filled season TJ FORD is still saying he wants to be back with the Raps. But with Calderon playing the bigger role to close out the season, you have to wonder if TJ is in the long term plans.

LB & IT

THE REPORT IS IN

According to sources, Larry Brown will be the next coach in Charlotte for the Bobcats. After the NYK debacle, "Next Town" Brown has found himself another willing suitor. If you're Michael Jordan and the Bobcats, after having signed big name Jason Richardson, the move makes sense because you need to go after the best. Despite what happened with the Knicks with Brown at the helm, he's the best coach available.

With Okafor and Gerald Wallace on the defensive end, Larry Brown has two players close to the basket who can play strong guarding the interior, something he didn't have in NY. In Felton, he's got a young PG who is very mobile, very raw and very coachable. He doesn't have the savvy or strength that Chauncey had while Brown was coaching the Pistons, but Raymond Felton should benefit from LB's coaching in ways Stephon Marbury could not.

Brown will inherit the roster problems that are Sean May and Adam Morrison. To be fair, Morrison was injured most of the year as was May. Except with May, its been the case with most of his career.

J-Rich and Gerald Wallace are two way threats that are interchangeable in the lineup. With Gerald's ability to also play the four in small lineups, the core of the Bobcats is pretty strong, relatively young and coachable...they should be players Larry Brown can work with.

The Bobcats also added former Knick Nazr Mohammed to anchor the middle. He saw limited minutes at Center soon after the trade but I imagine that with a training camp and LB at the coach, Nazr will soon allow Okafor to play his natural position.

Michael Jordan found his Tarheel counter part in Brown. With Charlotte's media being a fraction of the NYC MSM, MJ should have nothing to worry about.

Hawks Walk the Walk

Joe Smith and Joe Johnson have arrived. The Hawks have not been satisfied with just making the playoffs this year after ending the longest "playoff-less" drought in the NBA. After not making the playoffs since 1999, the Hawks have held court and forced the team with the best regular season record to a best of 3 series. Are the Big3...the Boston Three Party about to become the 07-08 Dallas Mavs and waste a terrific regular season record to a team who barely got into the playoffs?

We have been paying attention to the Hawks since the preseason. Josh Smith was reported to have spent a few weeks training with one of the league's most mobile big men and defensive game-changers in Hakeem Olajuwon. Josh and Joe have had their sights on the playoffs all season but making the playoffs have not been enough. After dropping the first two games by an average of 21 points to Boston in Boston, Joe and Josh turned in performances that have shocked the NBA world.Josh & Joe

"[Coach Woodson] said I had to carry the load," said Joe Johnson, who started the fourth with a 3-pointer and finished it with two free throws with 14.3 seconds to play for a 95-89 Hawks lead. "Mike [Bibby] was setting picks and I continued to take what the defense gave me. They were going to stay with Mike and not let him get an open shot and I was just trying to get around my guy to make plays."

"People were acting like we were supposed to be some charity case but we felt all along that we belonged," said Smith, who finished with 28 points, 12 in the fourth quarter, besting his previous career playoff high of 27 points from Saturday's Game 3 win over the Celtics. "They bested us in [Games 1 and 2 in] Boston. We can't erase that. But this is a series now, a real series."

So ATL now has everyone's undivided attention.

“We don’t want what happened to Dallas last year to happen to us,” the Celtics point guard said of the top-seeded Mavericks’ first-round elimination by eighth-seeded Golden State last April.

“Joe Johnson’s (expletive) the most underrated player in our league besides Rasheed Wallace,” Kevin Garnett said. “Most underrated player in our league. I give it to him, he played his (butt) off.”

Anyone else fall off their chair when Pachulia shoved his forehead into KG's? Make no mistake, the Hawks aren't taking this series lightly or planning on sitting one out. If you thought the first two blow outs were indicative of what was to come from this series, you were wrong!

Knicks Notes: Thibodeau is still my choice. When I think of the 90's Knicks, I think of their defense. Thibs was responsible for their defense and I think that with him as HC, Ewing & Oakley will still have as much of a chance at the assistant positions as if Jackson was the HC.

The coaching search is still ongoing. Ewing's still pitching a bitch and expecting MSG to give him a call out of courtesy and respect. If he wants the job BigP should get off his ass and make the call himself. Sometimes if you want something n life, you can't wait around until the right people feel they owe it to you. You gotta just jump up and take it. Still, I don't think he really wants the job. He just doesn't want to say no to it either. Who would say no? Dolan's throwing his money around like he doesn't know what else to do with it.

Mark Jackson is also on the Bulls' interview list which is reportedly set for Wednesday. Riley's won't coach the rebuilding Heat anymore (did he coach them this season?). Who wants to bet he'll jump back on the bench when they start to make noise in the playoffs again? The slick haired one is devious.

REPOST REPOST REPOST

Yeah baby, that’s what I’m talking about. Love the responses. Now that’s fun.

Brother TMAN, great to read you as usual. I will be adding those selections to the reading list above. Good stuff. Make yourself at home.

Cooley baby, you crack me up. How did you know that I was searching high and low for “Harlem River Drive.” Couldn’t find it, so I settled for Humphrie’s edition/rendition of the “New York Times.” But a little “Harlem River Drive” would have fit in anywhere like after Ellington or before Cynda Williams. Now, I love me some Blackbyrds but in order to make this playlist they would need to rename that song “Doin’ it in Central Park.” Now if you tell me that tappin’ azz in Rock Creek (DC for those who don’t know) is of or better than Central Park caliber activity, I may need to reconsider. And I’m guessing Mr. Cooley Suave can give me an analysis of both venues. (LOL).

African, you kissy kissy my cheeks while rubbing salt in my wounds. Ouch. But you know I am waiting for the Celtics to get their azzes bounced so I can republish major parts of my analysis and regain some of my dignity. There was very little wrong with my analysis: it was my prediction that was funked up. But hey, they made it to 84 games before falling apart – I am definitely rooting for the lowly Hawks. If they make me look better, I’m gonna join an ATL blog with the rest of my food stamps. (lal). (Hey, now you know when I get into something there “Ain’t No Half Steppin’.”

I look forward to watching “Next Town Brown,” but I feel for MJ who you know did not want Larry last year. I guess the fraternity got to him. I say Larry needs two-three years to create a team significantly over .500.

How in the funk does Scott Skiles keep getting jobs? How in the hell does the NY press try to promote him for a job. He will never retain the respect of modern day players. First of all his arrogance does not match his level of accomplishment. Secondly, he can’t coach.

Kudos to Pat Riley for a great coaching career and for giving a youngun who’s been working in the trenches a chance.

For all those who want Avery Johnson as coach, they might have their man because if Dallas goes down in the first round, Johnson might be looking for a new job.

I just don't see why you'd want a coach who can't get a talented team like Dallas out of the first round.

As I said, I'd take Bill Laimbeer first choice or Tom Thibodeau second choice over Mark Jackson, but I don't think Mark Jackson is a bad choice.

DaVonn Clinton Jefferson
Be a Real Fan
'Lives',

Did you guys see the show the Real MVP put on last night. Chris Paul, triple double, controlling the flow of the game. Could you imagine the Knicks record with Paul running the point.

Clinton Jefferson, first the Knicks would win 57 games. Next, the Mavs would beat the Hornets. Give us one more prediction.

Those focusing on hiring a defensive coach , are stuck in the 90s. The game has changed. In the twenty first century, you have to score pointsto win. The game is called differently. Please wake up.

Those of you calling for a WNBA coach. I can't say you are asleep. I will say that you never knew the game.

Peace & Blessings

Watched both games last night and I have to say Phoenix looked like no match for San An...and Dallas was terrible until Stack was bounced from the game. Who knew?

Does this mean Avery Johnson is out? I think Cuban should get the heat for trading two players (Diop, Harris) who would have made that series look competitive (at least).

Paul did his thing. His team isn't as bad as some think. Yes, he's a great talent. His team is filled with role players and specialists and led by a coach that has been putting competitive teams on the floor (when not rebuilding) for, at least, the last 5 yrs. We'll see how Paul does in the next round.

Steve Kerr needs to take the heat for the Suns troubling performance. Phoenix has a real problem down there taking care of their own. First, they won't pay Joe Johnson and lose him to Atlanta - who have taken advantage and built a team of super athletic, super hungry whippersnappers. And now Phoenix wouldn't retain Marion who did so many different things on the floor from the 3 or 4 positions that they might as well have dismantled the team if they were willing to trade him. That's just my opinion of course. I would have traded Diaw before Marion. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't have traded Marion at all. The Suns were doing well with him.

They might not have won the chip this year but they would have had a better record and avoided meeting the Spurs in the first round. If they got out of the first round, who knows which teams they would have faced. They could have gotten lucky and met NOH, who I think, they could have beaten with Marion and Co. Oh well...that's history now.

Will Steve Kerr be blamed? Will Cuban? No.

Was Isiah for taking the same risks? (Chasing big names to take the talent on the roster to the next level?) Yes.

They'll blame it on the coach in the case of Dallas. Cuban shouldn't have taken the gamble. When Stack opened his mouth and Devean George refused and thereby ruined the first deal Dallas had in place, Cuban should have scrapped the deal. If they thought Dirk and Devin Harris couldn't do it together, they should have looked into moving Dirk. Sad, yes, but true.

Before you fire Avery...they should at least give the group next year to see if they can get it together.

Will D'Antoni be fired? Will Kerr? Doubt it. They'll be at it again next year waiting/hoping for Stoudemire to explode.

Paul at the point for the Knicks, we'd be talking about a breakout year for Curry, JCraw and QRich. Jared would have emerged as a crafty defensive pest who'd guard the middle three positions (cuz that's all he would be expected to do with Paul dominating the ball) and Zach would have appeared to be an unselfish scorer/rebounder because Paul would not allow him to chuck up ill advised threes.

Paul was nuts last night. I enjoyed the game thoroughly. I'm seriously jealous of the Hornets. Steph makes Paul look like MJordan by comparison. Or better yet, Isiah Thomas the player. Ugh.

Oh well, we definitely need a new PG next year.

States,

If its a choice between scoring and defense, I'll always take defense. The only reason Detroit is still relevant is because of their team defense. The only reason Boston is being talked about as elite is because of the team defense. The only reason the Spurs are a dynasty is because of their team defense.

The Knicks can put up points by the boatloads in short periods of time. They can put the ball in the basket with the best of them. So can Denver. But good team defense can stifle all but the best penetrators, best shooters and best motion offenses. If you dont have "the best" of something...u gotta find another way to win.

That part of the game hasn't changed.

So the choice for me becomes: Do I wanna scrap this team of scorers or do I wanna keep some in place and coach them up? I always wanna coach them up. What they need is a defensive coach and the supplemental personnel to execute the new gameplan. If we can get a game changer, that's even better.

But if you thought all Isiah had to do was implement a better offensive gameplan...then its you who's been watching the game wrong. The Knicks never got a stop when the game was on the line this year. They relied too much on their offense and sometimes they would make the shot, but more often the other team just buckled down and played good defense.

That's the difference in my eyes. Ain't no pink eye either. HAHA
